Diversity

Sutin, Thayer & Browne is committed to diversity in the legal profession.  The firm is proud of its history of recruiting and training the best and brightest lawyers available. We have had a public-service–minded, small-“d” democratic nature, making it a point in the early 1970s to hire female lawyers in numbers, and continuing through the decades to seek out lawyers of various ethnic/racial heritage, ages, academic experiences and sexual identity. That tradition continues: Our goals are to recruit, hire, train and mentor the best lawyers we can find for the best mix of skills, talents and experiences we can assemble.

  • In 2019, the firm achieved Platinum status in its first year being offered by Family Friendly New Mexico because of our strength in three additional categories, one of which was Diversity and Inclusion. Additionally, by being a family-friendly business, we are ensuring the inclusion of parents of young children in our firm’s success.
  • In 2017, the firm was highlighted for our ongoing participation in and commitment to the State Bar’s Arturo Jaramillo Summer Clerk Program as part of the program’s 25th anniversary celebration. Arturo Jaramillio, the first Hispanic president of the State Bar of New Mexico, started the program in 1993 with the goal of offering law students of diverse backgrounds the opportunity to clerk in legal settings that would provide a foundation for the students’ law careers.
  • In 2013, the firm was one of only three in the United States to be honored by AT&T with its national Legal Diversity and Inclusion Award, joining global legal powerhouses Baker Botts and Beveridge & Diamond. In 2012, the firm became a women-majority-owned law firm, the largest such law firm in New Mexico and among the largest such in the United States. That status fluctuates as shareholder numbers change, but we consistently approach a 50-50 women-men ownership.
  • In 2010, the firm earned the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s Sager Award for the 10-state South/Southwest Region in recognition of achievements in hiring, retaining and promoting women and minority attorneys, along with international giants AT&T, Citgo, Shell and Baker Botts.

“Their depth is impressive, and their professionalism and client service are the best I have seen in any firm.”
