Sutin, Thayer & Browne Now a Women-Owned Law Firm

January 23, 2012

Sutin, Thayer & Browne is pleased to announce its new status as a women-owned law firm.

As of January 2012, Sutin, Thayer & Browne, a legal corporation, has 12 female shareholders and 10 male shareholders, making it the largest women-owned law firm in New Mexico.

“We are proud of our long history of recruiting and training the best and the brightest lawyers among us, and thrilled that it has resulted in becoming women-owned,” President and CEO Jay D. Rosenblum said.

With a total of 46 lawyers in its offices in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, Sutin, Thayer & Browne is well known for its size and strength in corporate legal services and its commercial litigation teams.

It is the third-largest law firm in New Mexico and one of the state’s oldest firms, established in 1946.

“I have had great mentors at Sutin,” said Gail Gottlieb, who joined the group in 1980. “The firm has always stressed the importance of mentoring all its young lawyers, irrespective of gender.”

State Bar of New Mexico President Jessica Perez offered her compliments on the milestone, saying, “Women are not only underrepresented in the legal profession but many times undervalued as well. I am pleased to see that Sutin has evolved into a women-owned firm, and I congratulate them on this remarkable achievement.”

The firm also stands out in the national picture. The National Association of Minority and Women-Owned Law Firms, the leading such group in the United States, lists no other certified women-owned law firm in the nation larger than Sutin.

Women account for only 15 percent of equity partners in the country — a level that has not changed in 20 years, according to the National Association of Women Lawyers.

“Sutin, Thayer & Browne is actively committed to diversity of all kinds, focusing on the recruiting process, a mentoring program that emphasizes retention and promotion, a transparent compensation program, and collaboration with the community and bar associations,” Vice President Anne Browne said. Lawyers and staff include individuals of all ages, interests, backgrounds and cultural heritage.

Sutin, Thayer & Browne has provided exceptional legal services in New Mexico and beyond since 1946.
